Nationally recognized residential architecture firm, LaRue Architects, celebrates its 34th anniversary this year. Principal James LaRue and his team have perfected a Texas Hill Country contemporary vernacular that draws on regional building methods and materials distinct to the unique environment for a modernist-inspired approach to Texas living. Whether a dynamic lakefront property, a tight site in an historic neighborhood, or acreage ranch land, LaRue’s work captures what is spectacular about living in Texas – the vast views, big skies, sweeping breezes through the treetops, rolling hills, and frames of a vibrant cityscape.

By staying deliberately boutique in size, each project architect can intimately cater to their clients’ needs with personal attention and hands-on problem solving. All along the way, these client relationships have been the core of the firm’s success. The tried-and-tested team also includes top-notch builders and consultants who understand how to bring the firm’s work into realization. LaRue’s use of 3-D computer modeling provides clients with a clear vision of the finished product, virtually touring them inside each space and fully engaging them in the creation of their new home.

Over the past three decades, LaRue Architects’ residences have received dozens of awards and have been included on numerous home tours, including the recent 2019 and 2021 AIA Austin Homes Tour. With about 500 private residences designed and built, the firm completes a limited number of projects each year in order to enjoy the close contact with clients. And while based in Austin, LaRue has designed residences all throughout the Texas area, and has expanded it’s reach into Tennessee, South Carolina, and Massachusetts.

The cornerstone of LaRue’s work is the mindful approach to each homesite’s topography by integrating the surrounding environment. Recent examples include a copper glad, glass house designed and built around an ancient grove of live oak trees with spectacular sightlines to Lake Austin at every turn, an historic 100-year old bungalow carefully restored to ensure the neighborhood history and integrity while incorporating modern architecture and design, and a home situated amongst 300 acres of sheer bluffs, limestone and boulders with endless views and ‘dog trots’ to capture the sweeping breezes.

Always pushing for innovation while striving for timeless design, James LaRue and his team continue to build the firm’s legacy of designing unique private residences that are site specific and client driven.
